Is Templar a good fit?

Templar is the clearest starting point for the tank fantasy. Choose it if you enjoy making the fight predictable for the rest of the party, including when to engage, where to stand and when to move.

The guidance below is editorial. A defensive identity does not make you immune to mechanics, and it does not mean that every group composition requires a Templar.

Solo: learn defenses before larger pulls

Use ordinary enemies to learn the difference between an attack you can avoid by movement and one for which you want an available defensive skill. Read the skill description before assuming the shield blocks automatically or in every direction.

Keep pulls small until you can see the full encounter. Bringing more enemies together is only useful when you remain in control and can finish the fight reliably.

Group: make positioning predictable

Check that the party is ready, identify the opening target and choose a position with room to respond. When encounter mechanics allow, keep enemy facing and movement predictable so allies can maintain their own safe positions.

Watch the party as well as the enemy. If a threat reaches a teammate, use the protection or control tools your current loadout actually provides. Tell the group when a major defensive option is unavailable rather than assuming the healer can cover everything.

First practice session

Practice these habits before trying to lead an unfamiliar dungeon.

  • Find and read your defensive, protection and enemy-control skills in the current client.
  • Place key defenses where you can use them while moving the camera.
  • Watch an enemy tell, respond once, then identify what actually prevented the damage.
  • Practice moving to a planned safe space and stopping there, instead of continually circling.
  • In a learning party, explain that you are learning and agree on pull size.

Build for the assigned encounter

Begin with the problem your group is facing: an opening hit, repeated damage, an enemy reaching allies or a movement mechanic. Match your available tools to that problem and check their cooldowns and restrictions.

Do not replace every offensive action with a defensive one automatically. Test whether you can still perform the party assignment and contribute through the whole encounter; survival, control and completion all matter.

Compare nearby playstyles

Gladiator offers a different frontline identity if broad melee attacks are your main interest. Cleric is worth comparing if protecting teammates appeals to you but you prefer healing decisions to leading enemy positioning.
